GANHRI Leadership Holds Strategic Retreat in Rabat to Chart Course for New Term

At the initiative of newly elected GANHRI Chairperson Amina Bouayach, the GANHRI leadership met in Rabat for a two-day retreat to share vision and expectations, review operational context, and chart a course for advancing the organization’s strategic priorities.
The GANHRI Strategic Plan 2023-2027 and the organisation’s 2025 workplan, adopted by GANHRI’s Bureau and General Assembly in March, served as the framework for the discussions.
“This retreat represents an important moment to align our vision and establish clear priorities as we begin this new chapter of GANHRI’s leadership,” said Chairperson Amina Bouayach at the retreat’s opening. “We are committed to strengthening the role of National Human Rights Institutions worldwide and supporting our members in their vital work protecting and promoting human rights.”
At the GANHRI Annual Meeting in March 2025, the GANHRI General Assembly elected Amina Bouayach of Morocco as GANHRI Chairperson and Alyson Kilpatrick of Northern Ireland as GANHRI Secretary, for a three-year term.
The retreat focused on several key areas, including GANHRI finances and fundraising opportunities, the outlook for implementing the Strategic Plan in 2026-2027, and optimizing cooperation between GANHRI’s head office and leadership.
On the margins of the retreat, participants visited CNDH headquarters and the exhibition commemorating the 20th anniversary of Morocco’s Equity and Reconciliation Commission (IER). The exhibition, launched in January 2024 offers a powerful visual narrative of Morocco’s transitional justice process and the nation’s efforts to reconcile with its past.
“The IER experience represents a significant chapter in Morocco’s commitment to transitional justice and human rights,” noted Chairperson Amina Bouayach. “This exhibition preserves the memory of an important step in our country’s journey toward addressing past violations and building a stronger foundation for human rights protection.”
All participants expressed appreciation for the CNDH Morocco’s generous hospitality throughout the retreat and highlighted the productive discussions in setting a roadmap for implementing GANHRI’s Strategic Plan under the new leadership.
GANHRI’s next major institutional meeting will be a gathering of its Bureau, comprised of 16 members from all regions, including the Chairperson and Secretary, scheduled for later in 2025.
