2025 Annual Meeting

From 10 to 12 March 2025, more than 300 participants from NHRIs, UN partners and civil society met in Geneva for the GANHRI 2025 Annual Meeting.

With human rights, international law, and the multi-lateral system facing mounting pressures across the globe, NHRIs from all regions convened to strengthen cooperation and develop strategic approaches to promote and protect human rights amid complex global challenges. The event was co-hosted with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and co-funded by the European Union.

The 2025 Annual Meeting included:

  • GANHRI Bureau meeting  
  • GANHRI General Assembly meeting
  • Knowledge Exchange sessions on the role of NHRIs in promoting the rights of persons with disabilities and on the accreditation process
  • 2025 Annual Conference on the human rights of women and girls and the promotion of gender equality
  • Meetings of the regional NHRI networks of Africa, the Americas, Asia Pacific and Europe

A Knowledge Exchange session was held during the 2025 Annual Meeting to discuss NHRI experiences and good practices in relation to the accreditation process.

Annual Conference

Annual Conference

The GANHRI 2025 Annual Conference focused on “The Human Rights of Women and Girls: Promoting Gender Equality” and featured interventions from GANHRI Outgoing Chairperson Maryam Al Attiyah and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, alongside statements from Jürg Lauber, President of the Human Rights Council, Achim Steiner, UNDP Administrator, and diverse stakeholders including UN Women, CEDAW, the EU Fundamental Rights Agency, and civil society organizations. Participants examined strategies to combat gender-based violence, implement legal reforms, challenge stereotypes through education, and strengthen institutional frameworks for gender inclusion. The conference culminated in the adoption of an Outcome Statement that reaffirms the urgency of countering pushbacks on gender rights, strengthening accountability through NHRIs, and upholding international human rights commitments.
