GANHRI 2023 Annual Report
2023 was a year of immense challenge for National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs). Rarely have we faced so many significant and connected threats: war and conflict; shrinking civic space; climate change; and a rising tide of prejudice, populism and social division.
However, we also marked the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and, importantly for NHRIs, the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Paris Principles.
In the face of challenges, threats and reprisals, NHRIs worked courageously to help build the strong and inclusive communities the UDHR envisions, underpinned by a commitment to independence outlined in the Paris Principles.

The past year also highlighted the immense value that comes from NHRIs supporting one another and working in partnership through our Global Alliance.”

Accrediting GANHRI members
GANHRI’s Sub-Committee for Accreditation held sessions in March and October. At the end of 2023, GANHRI had 120 member NHRIs: 88 with A status and 32 with B status.

2023 Annual Meeting
Following a break of four years because of COVID-19 travel restrictions, more than 200 representatives from NHRIs, States, civil society and other partners took part in the Annual Meeting, held in March, which included an Annual Conference reflecting on the significance of the 30th anniversary of the Paris Principles and the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Events
In 2023, GANHRI organised or co-hosted 15 events and discussions–online and in person–for NHRIs, with an average of 100 participants for each event. Topics included human rights and climate change, the human rights of older persons, and advancing the SDGs.

Advocating member priorities
We delivered seven statements on priority issues for GANHRI members during the three Human Rights Council sessions in 2023. We also assisted 49 NHRIs members to participate directly in the Human Rights Council sessions, presenting a total of 87 statements.

Showcasing members’ work
We shared examples of our members’ efforts to promote climate action, confront torture and ill-treatment and respond to other pressing human rights issues. We recorded strong engagement on social media, on our website, through GANHRI News, and with by email. All key indicators increased on 2022 results.

Our partners
We are proud to partner with the four regional NHRI networks; with OHCHR and UNDP, through the Tripartite Partnership; with the European Union, through the Strong NHRIs project; and with key UN agencies and experts, non-governmental organisations, civil society and academic institutions. These partnerships help support and strengthen the work of NHRIs, increase our reach and broaden our impact.
