Training Course for NHRIs on the International Human Rights System

GANHRI strengthens NHRI capacities by promoting constructive debate and the exchange of good practices; and by delivering face-to-face and online trainings in association with its partners.

Since 2015, GANHRI, in collaboration with Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), organises a training that provides important networking opportunities during which NHRI representatives can share experiences and collectively identify what constitutes good practices for engagement at the international level. The training course aims to strengthen NHRIs’ capacity to effectively engage with the United Nations human rights mechanisms.

The training session, which is an opportunity to share experiences with peers, provides the staff of NHRIs with knowledge and skills pertaining to the functioning of UN human rights mechanisms and concrete opportunities for NHRI contributions. It is directed at NHRI staff from all regions and takes place in May in Geneva, Switzerland.
It provides skills related to engagement with these mechanisms, through interactive sessions on effective report writing and designing follow-up strategies for implementation of UN recommendations.

The training specifically addresses:

• Treaty Body systems
• Torture prevention, in cooperation with the Association of the Prevention of Torture (APT)
• The Human Rights Council and its mechanisms, including Special Procedures and the Universal Periodic Review
• Cooperation with NGOs

“The seminar was excellent and I have learned a lot about the different mechanisms of the Human Rights system and I am privileged to be part of this program. All the materials, the presentations, especially the UPR simulation, and the class on NHRI accreditation were interesting.”

“It was excellent and I have got new knowledge which is, I am sure very important for to support my NHRI.”
