GANHRI Working Group on ageing gathered in Seoul to determine upcoming activities
GANHRI Working Group on ageing and human rights of older persons met on 22 November in Seoul, Korea, during the 2022 International Human Rights Conference to discuss the Working group activities planned for the upcoming year 2023.
The Working Group discussed NHRI contribution to the UN Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing (OEWGA) and measures for increasing international cooperation for the protection and promotion of human rights of older persons.
The 2022 International Human Rights Conference on ‘Drafting a Convention on the Rights of Older Persons’ held the next day, was co-hosted by the National Human Rights Commission of Korea, which is chairing the GANHRI Working Group on Ageing, with the European Union (EU) and the Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions (APF).
The International conference gathered diverse stakeholders, including NHRIs, Ms. Claudia Mahler, the Independent Expert on the enjoyment of all human rights by older persons, diplomatic missions in Korea, international and regional organisations.
The National Human Rights Commission of Korea, presented during the international conference, the draft convention prepared by its own task force to gather inputs from NHRIs, UN agencies and civil society groups.
The conference aimed at conducting an in-depth discussion on a draft text for a convention on the rights of older persons from the perspective of national human rights institutions.
