During HRC49 urgent debate on Ukraine, GANHRI calls for respect of international humanitarian and international human rights law 

04 March 2022, GenevaIn response to the deteriorating situation in Ukraine, the Human Rights Council convened an Urgent Debate on the Human Rights Situation in Ukraine. 

During the debate, GANHRI delivered a statement expressing its concern about the situation of civilians in the country and called for an immediate end of hostilities and respect of international humanitarian law and international human rights law. 

GANHRI also expressed concern over the safety of its member, the Ukrainian Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights and her staff, as they continue to monitor and report the human rights situation in-country. 

National Human Rights Institutions should not be subject to reprisals nor any other form of intimidation as a result of their mandated activities, enjoy freedom from interference and functional immunity in order to perform their functions in conflict areas.” – said GANHRI Chairperson, Carlos Camargo Assis. 

“We express our solidarity and support to the Parliamentary Commissioner and staff – and call for immediate measures for their protection”.
