At HRC54, GANHRI reaffirms the key role of NHRIs in advising, monitoring, and reporting on the rights of older persons

15th September 2023 – GANHRI delivered a statement at the 54th Human Rights Council in response to the report of the Independent Expert on the enjoyment of all human rights by older persons.

We shared Independent Expert’s concern about the “pervasive and alarming instances of violence and neglect aimed at older persons”, and the absence of safeguarding measures at the national, regional, and global levels.

GANHRI stressed on the role of NHRIs in advising, monitoring, and reporting on the rights of older persons and the ‘Working Group on the Rights of Older Persons which provides NHRIs with a platform to advocate on international fora for comprehensive measures to protect the human rights of older persons.

Finally, we acknowledged the important collaborative work that is being done at the UN Open-ended Working Group on Ageing in New York and the Human Rights Council.

GANHRI will continue to support the mandate of NHRIs and work with partners to ensure the full realisation of human rights for older persons.
