NHRIs reiterate their commitment to work with States and all stakeholders, to help deliver the people-centred and rights-based vision of the 2030 Agenda
20th September 2023 – Daniele Bekele, Chief Commissioner of the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, delivered on behalf of GANHRI a statement at the 54th Human Rights Council urging States to renew their commitment to human rights-based action and fully implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
We highlighted the importance of 2023 which not only stands halfway to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda but also marks the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration for Human Rights, and the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Paris Principles.
We expressed concern over the slow progress in realising SDGs and urged States to prioritise and to fully deliver on the 2030 Agenda’s central promise “to leave no one behind.”
Human rights and SDGs are intrinsically interlinked and hence, taking collective and immediate long-term actions is important to ensure that SDGs are adequately met.
Further, GANHRI stressed on the important and unique role that NHRIs play in advancing rights-based implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which is in line with SDG 16 that focusses on the promotion of peace, justice, and strong institutions at all levels.
Finally, and most importantly, we urged governments to strengthen NHRIs and provide them with adequate technical and financial resources including pushing States to establish independent NHRIs which currently don’t have any.
The SDG Summit held in New York on 18 and 19 September, was a crucial opportunity for States to accelerate collective solutions and deliver the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Ahead of the Summit, GANHRI has adopted a Declaration calling for a human rights-based and people-centred action and highlighting nine key principles that States must prioritise to fully implement the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Goals.
GANHRI and NHRIs reaffirm the commitment to partner and collaborate with States including all stakeholders in contributing towards the full realisation of the 2030 Agenda.
