GANHRI calls on States to fully cooperate with SR mandate to advance the rights of persons with disabilities

11th March 2024During the Interactive Dialogue with the newly appointed Special Rapporteur on the rights of persons with disabilities at the 55th Human Rights Council, Elie El Baz, Member of CNDH Morocco delivered a statement on behalf of GANHRI welcoming the SR’s report and her priorities for the promotion and protection of the rights of persons with disabilities during her tenure.

We expressed support to the Special Rapporteur’s accessible, participatory, and inclusive approach to her mandate, with a view to centering the diverse voices and experiences of persons with disabilities throughout her work.

As independent institutions with a broad human rights mandate, NHRIs worldwide play a vital role in championing the rights of persons with disabilities and promoting inclusivity, equality, and dignity for all.

We welcomed the critical issues identified by the Special Rapporteur, which coincide with those that NHRIs address in their daily work. We particularly welcomed her intent to continue promoting the inclusion of disability in all efforts to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, as well as to address the specific and disproportionate impacts of climate change on persons with disabilities.

Finally, we called upon all States to fully cooperate with the mandate in order to advance the rights of persons with disabilities.
