Representatives from national human rights institutions (NHRIs) across the globe are invited to join GANHRI’s new webinar series that will explore practical steps to strengthen their efforts to prevent torture and ill-treatment. The six-part webinar series, developed in partnerships with the Association for the Prevention of Torture, will also examine the role of NHRIs in implementing the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture (OPCAT).
This inaugural webinar will focus on enhancing the role of NHRIs in the designation, coordination, and operationalization of National Preventive Mechanisms (NPMs) under the OPCAT. Interpretation will be available in English, French and Spanish.
Topics
- Introduction to OPCAT and NHRIs: A comprehensive overview of OPCAT obligations and the critical role that NHRIs play in the designation or establishment of NPMs and as NPMs in the majority of states parties.
- Models, Challenges and Best Practices: Exploration of various models for the designation of NPMs, with an emphasis on best practices and the role of NHRIs in success stories from different regions.
- Collaboration and Coordination: Discussion on effective collaboration between NPMs, NHRIs, civil society, the SPT and governmental bodies to enhance torture prevention efforts.
Objectives
- Providing valuable insights into successful strategies led by NHRIs for the designation and effective functioning of NPMs.
- Contributing to the development of a guidance document outlining best practices for NHRI engagement in torture prevention.
- Setting the stage for a series of discussions aimed at reinforcing the role of NHRIs in preventing torture and ill-treatment globally.
