GANHRI Bureau Meeting, 20-22 November 2019, Medellín, Colombia
The Bureau of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), met from 20 to 22 November in Medellin, Colombia, to discuss the new strategic plan (2020-2022) and future activities that will drive GANHRI’s work in support of national human rights institutions (NHRIs) in 2020 and beyond. Bureau members representing NHRIs from Albania, Australia, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, El Salvador, Greece, India, Namibia and Qatar participated in the meeting, as well as representatives of the GANHRI Head Office and of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) as observers. The GANHRI Chaiperson, Carlos Alfonso Negret Mosquera, in its concluding remarks highlighted that: “Human Rights are not an option, they are our flag and the reason why we exist”; ” I am proud that we advanced with the new strategic plan, which will guide us towards a better future”, he continued. The Bureau which was co-chaired by GANHRI Chairperson Carlos Negret Mosquera and the GANHRI Secretary Ali Bin Samikh Al-Marri:
– Evaluated progress made since March 2019 against GANHRI’s current Strategic Plan 2017-2019, and discussed priorities and activities moving forward;
– Received reports from its Working Groups on Ageing; Sustainable Development Goals; and Disability;
– Decided that the GANHRI 2020 annual meeting will take place in
Geneva, from 10 to 12 March 2020 and will focus on Human Rights and
Climate Change;
– Expressed concern at continuing cases of reprisals and threats against NHRIs, and decided to remain seized of the matter.
GANHRI Bureau members thanked the Chairperson, Defensor del Pueblo of
Colombia, and all his team, for the warm hospitality and care
throughout these days.
