Event hosted by the Network for African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI) and the Tri-Partite Partnership to Support National Human Rights Institutions (TPP) by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) with the generous support of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs through UNDP’s Global Programme on Strengthening the Rule of Law and Human Rights for Sustaining Peace and Fostering Development.

Background

The Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI) is the continental umbrella body of NHRIs established in African countries. It is composed of 46 NHRIs members (accredited and non-accredited) and has been operating from its Permanent Secretariat Office based in Kenya since 2007. NANHRI’s role is to support the establishment of NHRIs and strengthen their capacity to deliver on their mandate as per the Paris Principles. The Network also serves as a coordinating body of NHRIs and links them to regional and international human rights actors and stakeholders.

As part of the Tri-Partite Partnership (TPP), a NANHRI initiative was developed to 1) undertake a needs assessment of NHRIs in relation to COVID19 and identify strategic areas of support by international partners and 2) support the implementation of the Marrakech Declaration to expand civic space and protect human rights defenders. On the basis of the most urgent needs and resources available, NANHRI has been undertaking these activities from July to December 31st 2020. Following the successful implementation of the three activities, this webinar session was planned to present findings and outcomes of the collaboration.

Objectives

The NANHRI-TPP Symposium is an opportunity for key stakeholders, such as NHRIs and UN partners, to gather to discuss the implications of COVID-19 for NHRIs in the region and the findings and recommendations of the rapid needs assessment of African NHRIs. The webinar will also discuss the status of NHRIs on the implementation of the Marrakech Declaration to expand civic space and protect human rights defenders and present the tools developed to support NHRIs.

Modalities

The event will last 3.5 hours. The session will be conducted in English and an interpretation service for French speaking NHRIs will be provided. Therefore both Anglophone and Francophone NHRIs will be in attendance to learn and share experiences.
