Monitoring places of deprivation of liberty

The Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission has conducted investigations in 34 prisons throughout the country to identify existing challenges and to provide the relevant authorities with appropriate recommendations to prevent Covid-19 spread in the detention centers.

The Council on Human Rights of Morocco sent letters to all public administrations responsible for places of deprivation of liberty to advise of specific measures to be taken against the spread of the virus in detention centers.

Following monitoring in detention centres, the National Human Rights Commission of Nepal reported on constraints for persons deprived of their liberty to access drinking water, bathrooms and sanitation facilities, and noted with concern the unfeasibility to practice social distancing in crowed jails. The NHRC urged the government to ensure protection of the detainees and take measures to avoid transmission of the pandemic into detention centres.
